I speak English reasonably well, but I am a native German speaker. My Spanish is different: I cannot yet hold a conversation. Facing a Spanish baseline feels uncomfortable—but that is also what makes it useful.
The purpose is not to perform. It is to show the honest starting point before Lesson 1 of Rocket Spanish.
What if I cannot answer?
An inability to answer is valid baseline evidence. A polished introduction memorized in advance would hide the starting point; saying only my name, recognizing one word, or falling back into English would still show what is true before Lesson 1. A true zero point gives every later comparison meaning.
Five situations at each checkpoint
The five situations are a spontaneous introduction, ordering a simple meal or drink, asking for and following directions, answering five simple personal questions, and attempting a short beginner conversation. They will return in comparable form after 10, 30, 60, and 100 actual Spanish study hours.

This is a personal comparison, not a formal CEFR assessment. “True beginner” remains the accurate description until stronger evidence exists.
